What is a Bloke?
What is a Bloke? This is the question that has occupied the greatest minds of the anthropological and sociological worlds for many years. This is the funniest book I've read in years, an absolute joy from start to finish. If you are Australian, you owe it to yourself to read this book - the detailed summaries of the various breeds of Bloke are not just hilarious, but also instantly recognisable. You will know examples of each kind of bloke that the author delineates and, having read the book, you will understand them (and possibly yourself) in a new, funnier, better light. If you are not Australian, then you may not appreciate the full depth of the comedic brilliance at play here. And for that, you have my pity. But you will almost certainly still get far more than your money's worth in terms of sheer laugh out loud moments.Highly, highly recommended.

As one of the first truly seminiferous works of Australian philosophy, Ben's opus will naturally be exposed to more than the usual, less than rigorous, critical examination. Before analysing his dissection of the Australian male psyche, it would be as well to look briefly at the man himself. One of the first physical descriptions of Ben Pobjie comes from an admirer, Russel Coit, at his brother Peter's Buck's Party in 1986 "I found [his appearance] almost comical. He was then twenty-three years old; he had something quite irregular in his entire form and had a strange coiffure. His hair rose almost six inches above his forehead into a tousled crest that fell down the back of his neck and gave him a strange, bewildered look." This coiffure was later to become known as "The Mullet". Today Ben is very different. A grim, weathered Grizzly Bear of a man, scarred by the trials of Australian academic life and occasional knife fights with fellow members of the Philosophy Dept of Woolloomoolloo University.
But what of this "Book of Bloke"? The fatal fruits which Mr Pobjie shows to arise from the union of Church and State, of Pell and Abbott, of Opus Dei and the Countrywomen's Association of Wombat Crescent, have strengthened the scruples of many Australian men, who now feel that they can remain no longer among the Metrosexuals, not just because that is no longer a "thing" but because thereby they are in communion with Wankers, for there is among them no Manly Discipline. Thus, the desire to be an Authentic Bloke and not an Urban Bloke becomes increasingly strengthened among them. They also wish to see J. Bishop (whose plagiarism has nonetheless inspired me) hung out to dry. And more than one of his friends has lately declared in their blogs, that this book convinces them that most Aussie Blokes are more fit to be Prime Ministers than the Mad Monk, but that the PowerFox must be considered at least an honorary Bloke. I strongly recommend this work.
This is hilarious and astute. How he has experienced so many species of bloke in his short life is somewhat beyond me.
Slowly, this country will realise just what a genius Pobjie is.
Everything you ever wanted to know about that enderaingly indigenous creature, the Australian male, affectionately known locally by the female of the species as 'the bloke'.
An extremely useful analysis - particularly for any young lady who may be planning to trap one. Forewarned is forearmed.
This book gives more information about blokes than many of thought we needed to know.However, once deep into the erudite, but hilarious, text, I realised there was a lot more to the Aussie bloke than I thought and I kept hoping I didn't fit several of the ''types''. A relaxed, well-written expose of the various types of blokes. I look forward to a follow-up, the Book of Sheilas? Please?
