'A couple is a conspiracy in search of a crime. Sex is often the closest they can get.'

All the present controversies about the family are really discussions about monogamy. About what keeps people together and why they should stay together. Now, in a book of 121 aphorisms, Adam Phillips asks why we all believe in monogamy, and why we find it so difficult to think about.

Everyone knows that most people, however much they may love their partner, are capable of loving and desiring more than one person at a time. It may be reassuring, but it is in fact very demanding -- and often cruel -- to assume that only one person can give us what we want.

At least in sexual matters, sharing seems to go deeply against the grain. Monogamy is so much taken for granted as the foundation of the family and of family values that, as with anything that seems essential, we are very wary of being critical of it. But, as Adam Phillips suggests, it is surely worth wondering why the faithful couple has such a hold on our imagination, and how it has come to be such an ideal.

Few books have I planned to re-read as soon as I hit the last page. This is one of those books.

Phillips is more than smart. More than a poet with ideas. He makes you think and rethink. You read and then exclaim, "Say what?" And then you re-read the paragraph and say, "I guess that could be. Damn. That's exactly how it is. How'd he figure that?"

He wrote this two decades back; way before poly or polyamory was a word, or was just budding at least. Brilliant stuff.
No shock the reviews are some five, some one star. Many readers will come in to this book with their minds made up. Who hasn't been cheated on or divorced at this point. So, some will read this book with a jones either for or against monogamy. But what if you've been married more than once; or your at the end of one marriage and the beginning of another and wondering if you'd been duped? Hello five star rating.

Many of my guy friends who have been married a couple decades and are now in their 50s are wondering if they'd do it again-monogamy. Hats off to you if you are a reader who can take the stark ideas that Phillips will put you through. It's not that he has new ideas; it's just that he takes the old ones and puts them on their head one by one. Or spins them 180 degrees to make you think.

Big thing is, I don't get at all that the author is bitter at monogamy. He's just real. He shows those into polyamory and those into monogamy that WE is often an US/THEM thing, the very root of war and conflict.

We are born alone. We are a minute later tossed in with mom in a 100% WE deal, a couple. Phillips hits this theme often. But then we go off to school alone; take our first communion alone. We are laid in a wooden box alone in the end game. Phillips let's us look at how odd perhaps is the entire concept of coupledom in the face of aloneness.

Read this book if you are brave. Read it twice. It has no answers; only questions. I like that. Apophatic it is; and I loved this about the work.

Sorry, but two post graduate degrees did not help me understand any of this. You have to be a fan of psycho therapy to appreciate it. A waste of money, but, fortunately it is so brief as not to consume too much time.
I could not get a grip in this book at all.
I think Mr Phillips writes magnificently about people ( the grip he needs ).
I shall read it again as I feel I missed something this time.
I shall still await every book he writes, as I can always carry away a new theme from anything he writes.
I shall, definitely try again.
small little bot mots about marriage. I write weddings for a living, and I am sure that Mr.Philips will be making an appearance this year.
Always a joy to read him
Adam Philips book of aphorisms on monogamy can seem two clever by half, and yet there is a core of rigid psychoanalysis conceptually undergirding them. The aphorisms have a philosophical feel that are designed unsettle the reader and have them question the role of relationships and the social assumptions in them. It does not set out to paint monogamy as a myth or to go into sexual anthropology--it is more a means of questioning via resistance. You will probably disagree with many of Philips assertions, and he probably designed it that way. It is, however, fairly intelligent reading and enlightening on its own course even if you don't agree with every aphorism.
A short aphoristic volume containing thoughtful reflections on monogamy and marital infidelity. Full of insights, some surprising, some quite profound.
Great discussion. Very thought provoking. A very different type of analysis when it comes to the topic of infidelity. Worth reading!
